The Big Takeover shares a new High Water Marks song

TRACK PREMIERE

More music today from the upcoming new album by The High Water Marks! "Reason Vs. Truth" is a deep cut from the record premiering today over at The Big Take Over.

I hope I'm not being tracked when I post this, but Hilarie Sidney provided the following: "This song is about a guy who tried to run away from a lot of trouble. We heard that he might or might not be a member of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He doesn’t know that we know that he knows." Well!

Proclaimer of Things is out February 4 from Minty Fresh with vinyl goodness to follow shortly thereafter.

Americana UK highlights Linda Draper's masterful lyricism in an "'81 Camaro" feature

FEATURE

Americana UK is featuring Linda Draper’s latest single "'81 Camaro" today! The song feels like a straight-ahead country number, but Jonathan Aird touches on the candid lyrics. He notes that Linda "is not a puller of punches... she calls out some suspect thinking, with just a little touch of the old country sarcasm: ‘You say money can’t buy happiness / Well then give away your money and tell me how it feels to be free / Are you happy now?'

I love that lyric, too. Linda's a master at this kind of subtle, but emotionally startling, writing. Find the song, video, and a fun acoustic performance here.

Mark Bryan tells Goldmine about 10 albums that have changed his life

FEATURE

Loving what writer Lee Zimmerman says today at Goldmine Magazine in his intro to Mark Bryan’s "10 Albums That Changed My Life,” for which he actually wanted to name 20 (including Tom Waits, XTC, The Ramones, and The Replacements, along with other usual and essential suspects).

"It seems inevitable that Bryan will forever be associated with the band he helped found, Hootie and the Blowfish. Regardless of any popular perception, Bryan boasts a stellar solo career... the ever-emphatic 𝘔𝘪𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 establishes a new high bar as far as his individual achievement."

With a new premiere, Backseat Mafia nods to the "ode to strangeness" that is J Hacha De Zola's music

VIDEO PREMIERE

"Irrepressible blues. Brilliant stuff, beautifully shot," says Backseat Mafia today of the PULP Productions-created video for J Hacha De Zola’s “Faded," J's personal favorite tune on his current album East of Eden.

“J's music is an ode to strangeness, an invitation to dream and wander through dark, deeply poetic tales," says director/editor Victoria Rio. "The video was shot in a gorgeous derelict townhouse in the heart of London. We were incredibly lucky to be able to film in this location.”

When songwriters Chet Delcampo and Heyward Howkins team up as Later Fortune, it's a "Win."

NEWS

Their names alone spark curiosity: Later Fortune is the Philly-based duo of Chet Delcampo and Heyward Howkins.

Both are busy musicians and songwriters working at the front, back, and on stage, as well as appearing on each other’s recordings. This makes their upcoming two-song “Lateral To The Devil” single (out Feb. 11th, 2022) a rare thing. The previous Later Fortune release dropped three years ago, but patience pays.

Even at a mere two tracks and even with one being a cover (David Bowie’s Young Americans album cut “Win,” which Bowie biographer David Buckley called “one of the most gorgeous melodies Bowie has ever written”), it’s enough to underscore the taste and talent that results from decades of adulting in music.

“Lateral To The Devil” b/w/ “Win,” the upcoming single from Later Fortune, arrives Feb. 11th, 2022.

Adobe & Teardrops sets Jenny Parrott's new video - shot at Austin's Hole in the Wall - free

VIDEO PREMIERE

Shot in the bathroom at Austin's Hole In The Wall, "where women, femmes and non-binary people go to hang out," I've been waiting to set this video free for a minute! Jenny Parrott directed and stars in this done-in-one-take piece for her song "I Thought," which also features appearances by dancer Terrance Carson of Ballet Afrique, Ally Means on viola, and Carrie Jane Fink.

So stark, and fun, and moving all at the same time, go over to Adobe and Teardrops to watch and to also read an interview with Jenny, who talks about her vision for a more just music industry, how her coming out journey plays into her music, and more.

Americana Highways premieres Linda Draper's "'81 Camaro" and includes it on the "New Americana" Spotify playlist

Video Premiere

I'm excited about the way Linda Draper manages to infuse this easy-breezy country number, “’81 Camaro,” with candid, emotional ambiguity, a trademark traceable to her anti-folk roots. It's the trick of a master and Linda brings the same energy to the video (featuring authentic country line-dancing filmed at Cowboys in Orlando). She tells us, “I have never had more fun making a music video. We shot it in Orlando, partially at Fun Spot amusement park, checking out the coolest classic car show in town, playing games in the arcade, going on rides, and drinking beer.”

Americana Highways has the video premiere and writes that the song carries “feelings of longing, in a delightfully blended brew." The site has also featured the track on its new "New Americana" Spotify playlist, a veritable treasure trove of great new songs. I love when artists discover kindred spirits this way, as Linda did this weekend when she discovered Julian Taylor’s tune "It's Not Enough" and promptly knocked out a TikTok cover. Julian says, “I’ve never had anyone on TikTok sing along with one songs. Thank you Linda. You made my day :-)” If you’re on TikTok, why not give Linda a follow?

New album 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘱𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬 is out January 21.

Hilarie Sidney shares a fun family story - and the new High Water Marks video - with MXDWN

TRACK PREMIERE

New video from The High Water Marks today via MXDWN! The visual is a blast, but my favorite part of this piece is Hilarie Sidney’s story about her great-grandfather, who appears in a childhood photo on the "Proclaimer of Things" single cover art. She says that he “was so good at skating and doing tricks on both the bike and the skates that he started performing around the Midwest. He went under the moniker Little Willy Sidney, and Wee Willy Sidney." So much to love about that! New album out February 4 courtesy of Minty Fresh

Jenny Parrott scores KUTX's "Song of the Day"

TRACK FEATURE

The title track from Jenny Parrott’s new album was KUTX’s "Song of The Day" this past Thursday! The station’s Jack Anderson observes, “Unlike the similarly-named avian companion, Jenny Parrott has never needed to mimic anyone else to express herself… Parrott and her bilingual, triple-octave singing style have migrated into a soaring solo effort [and the upcoming new album, due at the end of this week, features] some of her finest vocal performances to date." Okay! Hear “The Fire I Saw (Is There Anyone To Meet Me?)” right now!

In Austin? Join Jenny at Hole In the Wall ATX this Friday, November 12 at her album release extravaganza!

Austin Chronicle is listening to Jenny Parrott

TRACK FEATURE

Austin Chronicle on Jenny Parrott’s new "Georgica" single (link in bio): "As if the singer-songwriter scribed the lyrics while sitting on a cloud, the feathery and bouncy 'Georgica' sounds like floating. A reminder of Jenny Parrott's easygoing verse and strong musical talent."

Full LP 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘚𝘢𝘸 is coming a week from Friday, on November 12!
