Bio: In 2009, Austin TX trio The Gary made waves with their debut EP, which produced the sleeper hit "Damn Machines" and six other songs of blue-collar angst and disillusionment. 2010 brings the arrival of their full-length album Logan, ten songs of "Minutemen-esque brevity and wit" that raises the bar, though maintains the aesthetic, of their Chub EP. On The Web: www.thegary.com Bio (Continued): It's been speculated that The Gary's sound is the antithesis of much of today's over-achieving indie rock scene, hearkening back to a sincere and direct approach that is sometimes lost on the gadgetry and vague delivery often found in current musical trends. The band simply believes they are following their noses, as well as honoring their influences. Peruse through their record collections, and you're sure to find albums by Husker Du, Silkworm, Mission Of Burma, Archers Of Loaf, Squirrel Bait, Sonic Youth, GBV, among many with the Touch & Go and Dischord imprint. Press Quotes: "Is it too late to pick an album of the year for 2009? Or maybe is it too early to pick an album of the year for 2010? Logan, The Gary’s follow up to their amazing debut EP Chub, was released digitally in late 2009, but on CD this month. Fortunately, the album is so good and so relentlessly compelling, it’ll be impossible to forget come well into next year." - Austin Sound "5 Austin bands to catch up to in 2010... Maybe it’s just a matter of it still being relatively obscure, but when The Gary unfurls its maudlin, steely-eyed, drinking-class woes over brittle shards of distorted guitar, it’s somehow easier to believe." - The Onion AV Club "There's more substance to be found in these seven songs than most double-LP concept albums...Intelligent, honest, unpretentious, stirring, grassroots indie rock like this doesn't come along as often as PR reps would like to have us think." - Ink 19 "'Damn Machines' is an anthem in search of a deserving revolution, and easily one of the year's ten best tunes." - My Old Kentucky Blog "I just know that this is the first record I’ve gotten from out of nowhere in a long time that actually made me feel something. " - 24 Hour Party Pooper "Chub is more than just a reverent ode to the band members’ rock heroes. Bassist/singer Dave Norwood’s world-weary lyrics, coupled with the band’s great instinct for restraint and the dry, stately tone of guitarist Trey Pool’s Fender Telecaster, make for a compelling if familiar sound." - Austinist "The result is strong, erudite, restrained-yet-bitter, almost methodical indie-rock that doesn't so much knock you down and invade your head as step past you with a hard look, sit down inside, and start reading your books, all uninvited. The Gary rocks with a ridiculous amount of restraint, surging and rolling along with barely a nod towards the audience; they can roar and burn, but fuck it, they don't need to." - Space City Rock "This is the kind of stuff you play to put a mellow exclamation point at the end of a great day. Not bad for two guys who met drinking beer while floating down a river in July of '08, added a guitarist and gave us Chub not quite a year later. Well done! VIVA!" - Caught In The Carousel "The Gary is primed to have a very big 2010. After releasing a sensational EP of blue-collar, irony-free rock with 2009's Chub, the Austin trio returns with the charging, nine-song debut album Logan. It's an impressive first album that builds on all the strengths that made Chub so headbang-worthy" - Austin360 "It’s tripped out (and not in the Animal Collective sense) and fun, the lyrics are simply playful and evocative and much of what we’ve heard so far is well worth checking out more. I think we just might." - Radio Exile On The Web: www.thegary.com |
