MOTORCADE

MOTORCADE | MOTORCADE | IDOL RECORDS | JAN. 19th, 2018

Bio:

Hitting on every pressure point of late 80s-early 90s button-the-top-button songcraft ala Depeche Mode, New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and so on, the 11 songs in 40 minutes on the debut album from Dallas-based band MOTORCADE (Idol Records, Jan. 19, 2018) will melt away the years for anyone who grew up in the era, and make anyone who wanted to, jealous.

When “first album” is in quotes, something’s up. When a “first album” sounds so accomplished, there’s got to be more to the story.

True.

The members of MOTORCADE -- Andrew Huffstetler (Voice), James Henderson (Guitar, Keyboards, Voice), John Dufilho (Bass, Voice), and Jeff Ryan (Drums) -- have previously recorded and/or been in touring bands with St. Vincent, The Apples in Stereo, The War on Drugs, Daniel Johnston, and many more folks you adore.

The fruit of these dues paid is a fine and fluid debut album that sounds quite effortless to the listener, obviously, since the initial popularity of the band’s first single “Recover” has turned the song into a local hit in Dallas, where it has stayed in regular rotation at nationally respected community radio station KXT for almost a year.

And why not?

“Recover” is one of those songs that you almost can’t wait to end so that you can listen to it again. “I listened to ‘Recover’ by MOTORCADE on repeat for 87 minutes today” could very well become a colloquialism by this time next year.

“When we first started actively playing together, we had a couple of my ideas and just played them to see if we could do it,” says Henderson of the tune, which ultimately led MOTORCADE to become an actual thing. “It worked out alright, but then I realized we’d need more songs,” he continues. “So that was the impetus to start writing.”

The rest of the album is no afterthought, to be sure. Everything here is just as strong as “Recover,” and is sent over the moon by serious production chops and musicianship, owing again to the substantial pedigree that these guys came to the studio with. It’s an aspect of record-making that is seemingly ignored by younger bands making music influenced by this era.

To wit, listen to the brutal fuzz bass by Dufilho, punctuated by a tom fill sent from Hell by Ryan that opens the album’s ironically titled penultimate track, “Not Too Dark.”

“For me, production and songwriting go hand-in-hand,” Henderson says. The sounds are every bit as important as the notes and chords being played.”

The self-titled debut album by Dallas-based foursome MOTORCADE arrives via Idol Records on Jan. 19th, 2018, preceded by the single “Recover,” streaming now.
